If there is a hole that is several inches wide and deep in the asphalt driveway leading your cabin in the woods, repair the driveway by following the steps below. Provide the driveway with a thorough cleaning and apply a product designed to protect against moisture or heat-related damage to prevent additional issues with the pavement.

You Will Need

  • shop vacuum cleaner
  • small shovel
  • metal tamper
  • crushed gravel
  • cold patch
  • asphalt float
  • degreasing agent
  • bucket
  • water hose
  • natural bristle brush
  • plastic drop cloths
  • thick nap roller cover
  • roller and frame
  • roller handle
  • paint tray
  • pavement sealer

Fill The Hole With Patch And Level The Material

Use a shop vacuum cleaner's hose attachment to suck up loose debris that is in the base of the hole, including leaves and small twigs. Add small shovelfuls of crushed gravel to the base of the hole to create a thin layer. Use the back of the shovel to spread the gravel pieces along the base in an even manner. The gravel will act as a binder and will assist with stabilizing the cold patch.

Use a shovel to fill the remainder of the hole with patch. Once the patch has reached the rim of the hole, move an asphalt float firmly across the surface of the patch to level the material. Wait for the patch to cure, which could take a day or two.

Remove Stains From The Pavement And Apply Sealer

Pour a degreasing agent into a utility bucket. Dip a natural bristle scrub brush into the bucket and apply pressure to the back of the brush as you move the bristles firmly back and forth oily substances on the asphalt's surface. Rinse the driveway off with a continuous flow of water. After the pavement has dried, drape plastic drop cloths over the property that is directly next to the driveway. Secure a thick nap cover over a standard paint roller. Attach a handle to the roller frame.

Pour pavement sealer into a paint tray. Place the paint tray on top of one of the drop cloths so that you will be able to easily access the product. Dip the paint roller into the tray and shake excess sealer from the roller. Move the roller along the length of the driveway, stopping to coat the roller with more sealer as needed. After covering the driveway with sealer, wait for the sealer to dry before driving or walking upon the pavement.
